This step-by-step roadmap comes in to help you, figure out how to understand the customer’s vision, make first drafts of the composition, and finalize the illustration.

My go-to medium for my illustrations are alcohol-based Copic Sketch and Copic Ciao markers. I love them because they can be refilled and have many accessories like nib replacements, which makes them a lifetime product.
Another favorite of mine is Winsor & Newton Brushmarkers because of their amazing professional quality. If you need a wide color range or finer bullet nib you can also try their Promarkers.
I like to outline my drawings with Copic Multiliners and/ or Faber Castell Ecco Fineliners before I start coloring. All pens are waterproof and come in a variety of line widths.
Faber-Castell Polychromos are my first choice when it comes to colored pencils, because they are oil-based and light-fast. Another pro-grade alternative I work with are Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils.
The watercolors I used for years and still use for commissioned original art are Winsor & Newton Professional Water Colours.
At the very beginning I started with the more affordable but also of a really high quality Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Colour Box.
For my regular illustrations, I work with Copic Marker Paper because it’s bleed-proof and allows you to use a lot less ink, saving you money in the long run.
If I need a heavier option, I sketch on Smooth Surface Bristol paper. It perfectly absorbs the ink without causing them to bleed.
